    英語辞書を読む楽しさ・・・

    英語辞書のなかで, いわゆる ”辞書らしい辞書” との中に, ”Pocket   Oxford American Dictionary ” があります. 英単語の意味のみ掲載されている辞書です. 

    しかし, ”Oxford Learner's Thesaurus A dictionary of synonyms” など, 読んでいて, いろいろ学ぶことが多くて, 読むことが楽しくなります. Thesaurus Dictionary と Collocation Dictionary をかねた辞書で, 例文を通して, 英語圏の人々のものの見方・考え方を垣間見ることができます.

     "One of the aims of modern nursing is to encourage patient autonomy." nursing に今と昔があり, 昔と今が違うのは, nurse の patient に対する接し方・・・. 医療スタッフに対する依存性を強めるために patient の autonomy を奪うのではなく, patient の autonomy を encourage するのが, modern nursing のあり方・・・. 

        ”Collins Cobuild Advanced Learner's English Dictionary" で encourage を引くとこのような説明がありました. ”If you encourage someone, you give them confidence, for example by letting them know that what they are doing is good and telling them that they should continue to do it.”

    ”Oxford American Desk Dictionary & Thesaurus” には, encourage の反対語として, discourage が挙げられていました.  discourage は, ”cause someone to lose confidence or enthusiasm” の意であるとの説明がありました. 

    人生の晩年, good nursing に出会うといいですね。
